This section includes information about:... Dr. Sears' Zone system... Drs. Eades' Protein Power... Hormonal Balancing Laws ... Metabolic hormones such as insulin and glucagon... Good and bad Eicosanoids... Arachidonic acid, also known as AA, which is one of the fatty acids that leads to production of bad Eicosanoids inside cells... With this information, it's easier to design a MAGIC system that most conveniently blends with your personal lifesytle and preferences.
Dr Sears says the Zone-favorable diet evolved from a 1982 Nobel
Prize in Medicine that demonstrated the importance of eicosanoids
in controlling how the human body functions. "YET, as powerful as eicosanoids are, they are
ultimately controlled by the composition of the diet." …. Zone-favorable foods are determined
by the hormonal responses generated by foods.
Balancing the metabolic and hormonal thought process is new enough that mainstream
society has yet to understand and embrace the facts about biotechnology.
The Zone-favorable Diet sets the body up to BURN FAT as a primary source of fuel
while retaining LEAN BODY MASS (LBM). How? By regulating the
amount of INSULIN the body produces…
Dr. Sears reveals that "fats do not make the body fat, INSULIN does!" …
Monounsaturated fat (oils from olives, canola, macadamia nuts, & avocados) doesn't
affect insulin and can't be converted into good or bad eicosanoids…. Whereas
"saturated fat can increase insulin by causing the condition known as insulin
resistance"...
Insulin is released by the pancreas after carbohydrates are consumed. While insulin
assures that cells receive the necessary blood sugar, it also inhibits
fat burning, converting almost half of your dietary carbohydrate directly into fat
and causes hunger.
The Zone Diet moderates the insulin response by limiting the intake of refined sugars,
and keeping ALL other carbohydrates to about 40% of the diet.
Every time you eat, it must be in the
correct ratio of Protein to Carbohydrate to Fats….
Fat Be Gone MAGIC suggests the ratio
Dr. Sears suggests a gram block measuring system resulting in a
for maximum control of insulin occurs
when the CPF ratio in foods consumed is
40/40/20
40% Carbohydrate, 40% Protein, 20% Fat.
CPF ratio of 40/30/30…
40% Carbohydrate, 30% Protein, 30% Fat.
The MAIN differences between the ratios are… MAGIC is designed for EASY general balancing of food intake to generate BODY FAT LOSS and MUSCLE RE-BUILDING… Fat Be Gone MAGIC uses
Essential Protein, which provides a FORM of SOY that doesn't have the fats other foods do… It is also an ALAKINE FORM thus can be consumed in a higher ratio than other sources of protein… Whereas Dr.
Sears' block system is based on precise gram blocks for traditional store-bought food sources…
Dr. Sears system works, but for the beginner appears too difficult to tactical. WHEN his block
system is followed precisely more good fats can be included in diet. This extra good fat seems to help retard the carbohydrates from over-stimulating insulin...
Both Dr. Sears and Drs. Eades' systems include helping a person IDENTIFY their personal Protein Prescription, and then insuring the exact amount of protein needed by the body is consumed each and every day as the body needs it.
THIS is a very worthy goal to strive toward… but like all goals if such appears too difficult,
few will make the attempt.
The idea of 40/30/30 has been around for a number of years. The difference is the Dr.
Sears' Zone has to do with Blocks which means Proper Macro Nutrient Ratio… Dr. Sears defines three blocks… a protein block (7 grams)…. a carbohydrate block (9 grams)…. and a fat block (1.5 grams)….. This is partly because they are round numbers, and partly because each block is assumed to have a little of the other macro-nutrients. Thus, Dr. Sears' fat block contains 1.5 grams of fat because he assumes a protein block contains another 1.5 grams of fat.
A person eats a certain number of blocks per day (enough to keep their Lean Body Mass steady). These are Individual Blocks of C, P and F - When one of each is eaten at the same time, this is called a Complete Block.
The primary hormones involved with storage and release of energy in the human body are Insulin and Glucagon. These hormones function in a push-pull system..
INSULIN is a hormone produced by the pancreas and released into the blood. Research indicates Insulin affects every cell in the body. Insulin's main function is to keep sugar level in the blood from being too high…. The brain is very sensitive to the blood sugar level, too much or too little places life in jeopardy. …. When foods is consumed, Insulin activates the metabolism to store any excess food-energy as fat. Insulin also.. directs the flow of amino acids, carbohydrates & fatty acids…. controls appetite… functions as a growth hormone… compels the kidneys to retain fluid… activates the enzymes that operate cholesterol manufacturing mechanism… and does many other functions. High levels of insulin stimulate the cells to produce high levels of cholesterol.
GLUCAGON main function is to keep the sugar level in the blood from being too low. When the body's activity level demand more energy, Glucagon activates burning stored fat to create the energy needed.
The importance of these 2 hormones (Insulin and Glucagon), and their proper functioning can't be over-stressed; they literally determine life and death for the body. It's the blood sugar level that governs the metabolic system, and therefore determines the entire state of being within the body. As is pointed out in the Protein Power book section on The Yin-Yang of Metabolism: What stimulates the metabolism to store or to burn is the dominance of one or the other these hormones... If our blood sugar, through the efforts of Glucagon and insulin, controls our metabolism, and we can control our blood sugar level by eating or not eating certain foods, doesn't it stand to reason that we can control our metabolism? ~ Indeed we can. In fact this ability to control our metabolism is the foundation of our Fat Be Gone MAGIC Zone dietary program. (IF you value your health and can only afford enough time to read only a few pages READ pages 32 - 38 in Protein Power ISBN 0-553-57475-2)
IF you read these few pages, you will certainly agree... "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the more time we spend on the Glucagon side, the better off we are."
Nor does it take being a rocket scientist TO GET on the Glucagon side and TO STAY there for the rest of our life. It's easy to understand that of the macro-nutrients in foods (protein, carbohydrate fats, fiber) carbohydrates require the most careful attention… This is because carbohydrates make the most profound change in blood sugar level, thus it's carbohydrates that make the most profound change in insulin. Fat doesn't do anything. As far as insulin is concerned, fat doesn't exist. In fact, if the level of insulin is maintained in the appropriate zone, the cells can't convert fats into cholesterol.
SNACKING on whole-foods throughout the day; rather than eating large meals...Foods from the WholeFood Farmacy are great for this purpose.... BUT if meals are the only choice possible, NEVER Go For More Than Five Hours Without Eating (Except during Sleep and detox or spiritual fasting.)... For most people, this means eating a snack between lunch and dinner, and another snack just before bed.
Avoid 'Bad' Foods. ~ Bad Foods are; foods with a high glycemic index (things that you digest quickly) like fruit juices or rice cakes, food heavy in polyunsaturated fats or saturated fats, and foods high in Arachidonic Acid. (Arachidonic acid, also known as AA, is one of the fatty acids that leads to production of bad Eicosanoids inside cells.
Eicosanoids include prostaglandins, prostacyclins, thromboxanes, leukotrienes and 100 or so compounds with 20 carbon atoms. They are powerful hormone-like substances that control virtually all physiological actions in the human body. To more fully understand Eicosanoids it's helpful to read the chapter on Microhormone Messengers: Meet the Eicosanoids (pages 331-359) in the paper-back version of Protein Power authored by Drs. Michael R & Mary Dan Eades. This chapter begins with a quote from Dr. Sears:
| " You can view Eicosanoids as the biological glue that holds together the human body. In that regard they are the most powerful agents known to man, yet they are totally controlled by the diet." |
Eicosanoids control and direct the regulation of such diverse functions as: the immune system... blood pressure... inflammation, pain and fever responses... increased blood clotting and constriction of arteries... increased cell growth... intestinal secretions... male sexual potency... uterine contractions during childbirth... wake/sleep cycle... and a multitude of other cellular responses.

Aspirin is a potent inhibitor of Eicosanoids synthesis, and as
such is widely used to block or control the problems that Eicosanoids cause, including
the mysterious headaches. Rather than treating the results of harmful kinds of Eicosanoids,
a wise approach is understanding what foods affect Eicosanoids production.
Some specific foods to avoid:
Eat More 'Good' Foods and get plenty of PURE WATER and soluble FIBER…
Good foods are; foods with a low glycemic index, and food heavy in monounsaturated fats.
Some specific Good foods:
SURPRISED that these are the exact opposite of popular nutritional recommendations? ~ The reasoning and accuracy becomes become clear as we begin to understand how to appropriately balance proteins, carbohydrates and fats, so to generate the beneficial results we desire and avoid the harmful results. By staying in the ZONE, a person definitely feels the improvements, and many medical tests will confirm why.
